WE NEED YOUR HELP

Background – If the Government issues a consultation about an area that potentially affects our members, then we believe Innopsis should respond and try to influence the outcome, rather than whinge about the results after the event.

We therefore need your help in crafting a potential response to the new ‘UK National Data Strategy consultation’ that closes on 2nd December 2020.

WHY ARE WE LIKELY TO SEE CHANGES IN DATA SECURITY REGULATIONS?

As we leave the EU, the UK has the opportunity to set its own laws. We are in the process of deciding which laws we should change. As you might expect at this stage, we are often more clear about what we do not like, than we are about what we do like, and will be the proposed replacement. In the area of data security this has potentially huge implications.

In 2018, Dominic Cummings described the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) as ‘horrendous’. He is rumoured to think it is overly-complex and expensive to administer. Why does this matter? To trade with the EU, both import and export, involves the exchange of huge amounts of data. The EU therefore asks any trading partner to accept GDPR or put forward their alternative data security laws for inspection. If they are deemed appropriate then an “adequacy certificate’ is issued and trade can commence.

Whatever data security laws we adopt will impact all aspects of UK trade, not just imports and exports, including the public sector. It is therefore important that we ensure our voice is heard.

HOW WILL THE DCMS CONSULTATION WORK?

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are running the consultation. It involves answers to 19 questions and the responses will be input into an online survey. Innopsis would like to collate your views and submit a response that reflects the views of as many of you as possible.

We have therefore set up our own survey platform and invite you to complete our questionnaire. The Innopsis survey can be found here [WE NEED TO CREATE A SURVEY MIRRORING THE 19 QUESTIONS IN THE DCMS SURVEY].

If you want to read some background on the DCMS consultation you can find it at https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/uk-national-data-strategy-nds-consultation/uk-national-data-strategy-consultation

TIMETABLE

To give us time to collate everyone’s views can you please complete the Innopsis UK National Data Strategy consultation questionnaire by Friday 6th November 2020.

Thanks for your help.
